RAF Coningsby - 80 Years and More at the Forefront of Britain’s Air Defences
MOST literature has the Battle of Britain timeline running from July 10 to October 31, 1940, with a key date during the fighting listed as August 24, many historians seeing that as the night the course of the war changed.
Britain’s air defences were under sustained attack, the Luftwaffe targeting airfields, bases and key industrial facilities, with the Allies’ supply of both aircraft and pilots being stretched to its limits – it would be 16 more months before the Americans officially entered hostilities.
With the German air force’s commander-in-chief, Hermann Göring, continuing to prioritise the bombing of RAF and Fleet Air Arm facilities in an attempt to minimise their capabilities, civilian targets were largely avoided. The hope was a sustained assault would put key airfields out of action, so preventing aircraft from defending the skies of southern Britain, enabling the Luftwaffe to protect their own forces crossing the Channel, the ultimate aim for the Heer (German Army) to land on British shores and force a surrender.

Hurricane & Spitfire
The pairing that proved just too good for the Luftwaffe
THE HURRICANE is seen by many as the unsung hero of the Battle of Britain, the fighter aircraft shooting down more German planes than all other air and ground defences combined during the three months and three-week fight for control of British airspace.
While the Spitfire is lauded as the king of aerial combat during WW2, throughout the Battle of Britain it had the specific role of dealing with the fighters escorting the bombers, ideally engaging at low altitudes where its excellent manoeuvrability made it the favourite in any dogfight.
Enemy bombers were the Hurricane’s target, and while the two combined to create a formidable force, the RAF also initially deployed the Boulton Paul Defiant in the Battle of Britain – a two-seat fighter that had the drawback of being without a forward shooting armament, so proving unable to attack aircraft from behind.

THE Battle of Britain during the summer of 1940 made heroes of many RAF pilots and aircraft, names like the Spitfire and Hurricane defining the defence of the UK that repelled a concerted effort by the Luftwaffe to gain control of British airspace.
Alongside the better-known aircraft was the Defiant, a fighter that earned its spurs during the Battle of France earlier in 1940, its firepower a surprise to German bombers who were unaware that the British possessed an aircraft with armaments at its rear. The two-seater had a pilot and gunner, its marksman with a swinging turret able to engage the enemy as it passed, taking the Luftwaffe somewhat by surprise as they had only encountered fighters firing at them ‘face-to-face’.
