RAF Coningsby - 80 Years and More at the Forefront of Britain’s Air Defences

THE critical role the RAF plays in the defence of the UK is epitomised by the two stations designated as QRAs, Quick Reaction Alert, – RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland and RAF Coningsby in England – with staff on constant high readiness to respond to any unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace.

RAF Coningsby is considered by many as the most important station in England, with reports of sonic booms in the vicinity of the Lincolnshire site becoming more and more commonplace as jets hit supersonic speeds on their way to either full-scale training exercises, or in response to active alerts of potential enemy aircraft.

3(F) Squadron

Proud to be the first in line to protect the UK’s airspace

FIGURES released last year revealed that British jets have been scrambled around 140 times in the past 17 years to intercept Russian aircraft either in, or approaching, UK airspace.

That role is carried out by Quick Reaction Alert, QRA, aircraft, with No. 3 (F) Squadron part of the southern section based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, in 2006 becoming the first RAF front-line unit to operate the Eurofighter Typhoon.

However, the squadron’s motto, Tertius Primus Erit (the third shall be first), was established long before the Typhoon came into service, No. 3 formed in 1912 as the first unit to be equipped with heavier-than-air machines.

XI(F) Squadron

Speed and Strength still the watchwords for the world’s oldest dedicated Fighter Squadron

IT was back in 2011 that RAF Typhoons were first deployed in enemy combat – patrolling the no-fly zone over Libya to prevent Colonel Muammar Gaddafi from attacking his own people who were rising up against the brutal dictator.

At the forefront of that campaign, tagged Operation Ellamy, was XI (F) Squadron, the world’s oldest dedicated fighter squadron, with then Wing Commander Jez Attridge handed the ‘honour’ of speaking to the media about the mission, highlighting his pride at seeing how the aircraft was able to meet the modern-day demands of policing the air space.

12 Squadron

The Typhoon team that is part of the RAF’s first joint squadron since World War Two

THE British Typhoon fleet is crucial to the defence of the UK and, as such, the RAF would be forgiven for putting concerns regarding the effect that operating the multi-role combat aircraft has on climate change fairly low on its agenda.

But even when it comes to protecting British airspace 24/7, reducing harmful emissions and cutting costs are at the forefront of military thinking. While the aircraft that can be scrambled in minutes and reach Mach 2 in a matter of seconds may be a long way from running on reconstituted cooking oil, their ground power is now provided by electric units, replacing diesel-power – the new system not only reducing harmful emissions by 90 per cent, but also cutting ground running costs by 80 per cent.

29 Squadron

From Biplanes to Typhoons: The Remarkable Century of No. 29 Squadron

WHILE the Red Arrows is among the most famous aerobatic teams in the world, the RAF also has a Typhoon Display Team which recently revealed a newly-painted design to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

One of the Typhoon aircraft of No. 29 Squadron underwent a 1944-style rebrand, painted as a ‘Day Fighter’ of the WWII era, resembling the design of the Hawker Typhoons of 257 Squadron, – a far cry from their modern-day namesakes – complete with the RAF Tactical Recognition Flash.

41 Squadron

The Squadron helping ensure the RAF is ready for any threat to the UK airspace

WHEN an incursion into UK airspace is made by an unidentified aircraft, the threat is countered by the Typhoons, the multi-role combat jet on 24/7 standby, maintaining the quick reaction alert, QRA, interceptor role.

The aircraft require regular testing to ensure they are capable of defending the country from any potential foe and during a recent exercise, a Draken Europe L-159E Honey Badger jet provided the ‘live’ threat for the Typhoon over the North Sea. The operation is part of the UK’s Interim Red Air Aggressor Training Service (IRAATS), Draken providing the RAF with replicated threats mimicking the tactics and techniques of enemy aircraft.
