RAF Brüggen
The closure of the station that ended the RAF’s 56 years on German soil
IT was more than 20 years ago that a ceremony was held in Germany to mark the closure of the RAF’s last station in the country, ending a 56-year continued presence since the conclusion of the Second World War.
The government minister for the Armed Forces in 2001, Adam Ingram, made a speech at Brüggen, noting that the RAF had made a valuable contribution to the “peace and stability of Europe” as countries across the continent came to terms with what they believed was the end of the Cold War.

RAF Laarbruch
The Mighty Fortress that was home to 1500 RAF Families
IN early 1999, No. 3 and No. 4 Squadrons took part in the closing parade at RAF Laarbruch, a ceremony that saw the British military officially mark the end of their presence at the site in the Northern Rhine which began back in March 1945.
The station was one of the key German locations that formed part of NATO’s front-line operations during the Cold War, the so-called ‘clutch’ of four air bases situated close to the Dutch/Belgian border, Laarbruch located just north of Bruggen, Geilenkirchen and Wildenrath.

RAF Gütersloh
The RAF station that was at the frontline of Allied defences during the Cold War
WHENEVER the RAF’s post-war presence in Germany is analysed, the main focus traditionally falls on the four locations near the Dutch border that were created in the 1950s – Wildenrath, Geilenkirchen, Brüggen and Laarbruch – and not the station that was arguably the most important RAF site geographically, situated around 130 miles east of the so-called clutch stations.

RAF Wildenrath
The first ‘clutch’ station that placed the RAF at the Cold War frontline
IN the late 1940s as the Cold War intensified, the Treaty of Dunkirk was signed by the UK and France, an alliance formed under the pretext that Germany could launch a future offensive against either country.
With Germany still suffering the after-effects of WW2, and little chance of any short-term return to its previous might, it was clear the real reason behind the move was the need for a combined defence against the growing military power of the USSR.

RAF Geilenkirchen
The ‘clutch’ station still crucial to NATO operations today
THE recent visit by Volodymyr Zelensky to Washington provided major issues for the NATO countries involved in ensuring the Ukraine president arrived safely in the US to meet Joe Biden and speak to Congress.
Fighter jets and spy planes were dispatched from a number of stations across Europe to provide protection for Zelensky and his entourage at all times, with a USAF F-15E Strike Eagle from RAF Mildenhall shadowing the Boeing C-40 military transport plane as it flew over the UK.
